In Memory of Fr. Harold Zink

Rev. Harold G. Zink, C.S.C. a member of the Congregation of Holy Cross, Indiana Province died on March 19, 2007 at St. David's South Austin Hospital.

Father Zink was born January 19, 1925 in Canton, OH to Frank A. Zink and Clara (Aman) Zink, the youngest of four children. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Maurice and his sister Geraldine (Mrs. Charles Kolp, Jr.). He is survived by his sister Evelynn (Mrs. John Bergen).

He attended St. Peter's Grade School and St. John's High School in Canton, graduating in 1942. He attended the University of Notre Dame and during that first year entered the Candidate Program for the Congregation of Holy Cross. He entered the novitiate at Rolling Prairie, IN on August 15, 1943; professed his first vows there on August 16, 1944. He graduated from Notre Dame in 1947 and then studied at Holy Cross College in Washington, D.C. His final vows were professed on June 3, 1948. Father Zink was ordained a priest at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart at Notre Dame, IN on June 6, 1951.

Father Zink's first assignment was to teach at Columbia Prep in Portland, OR (1951-52). While he was teaching there, he earned a Master's Degree in English at the University of Portland. He was then assigned as Associate Pastor at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in New Orleans, LA (1952-1957). He then became Associate Pastor at St. Mary's Cathedral, Austin, TX in 1957; Rector in 1963 and served in that capacity until 1974. He then returned to New Orleans as Associate Pastor at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church and served there until 1982. Father Zink returned to Austin as Associate Pastor of St. Ignatius, Martyr Church until retirement in 2003.

He was involved in many organizations at the church: the Legion of Mary, the Catholic Daughters and the Knights of Columbus to mention a few. Father Zink lived in retirement at Brother Vincent Pieau Residence, a house of the Brothers of Holy Cross, South-West Province in Austin.
